Convert to Disc Brakes
So maybe you’ve got a slightly older Surly, a classic mountain bike, or a touring bike that you’d like to convert to disc brakes — either hydraulic or mechanical. Well, if it’s steel, we can do it, and for a reasonable price.
And if you’re a Twin Cities resident, you can even hang out and watch the magic happen. Because we love you.
What We Do
We take your bike, and using the highest quality fixtures (manufactured by the guys at Anvil), precisely braze disc brake tabs to your existing steel frame and/or fork (not all forks should be used with disc tabs). We braze them on with bronze (“brass”) for extra strength, and cover the area with primer to prevent rust from forming. See the area below the price chart for important information on the process.

Important!
- Shipping costs and caveats. If you are outside the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area, you are responsible for all shipping costs incurred. Your frame will be shipped back to you only after you have paid for it. We repack the frame in the same box, using the same materials you provided, and do not take any responsibility for any sort of damage incurred during the shipping process — so pack it very thoroughly.
- Parts. We prefer to get bare frames and forks with all the parts removed. We cannot be responsible for anything lost, broken, knocked out of adjustment, mauled, mangled, assaulted, degraded, insulted, or otherwise Not Like It Was™. There is a $25 surcharge for working on a frame with parts still on it — mainly due to the storage space hassles, the frustration factor, and so forth. This surcharge will be waived for Minneapolis area residents who drop off/pick up their frame.
- Paint. Some of the paint/powdercoat on your frame will need to be removed before the welding process. We do not replace the paint. We do, however, cover the area with a coating of spray primer to prevent rust from forming.
- Compatibility. This process is to put on the disc tabs, and the necessary cable guides, and nothing more. We do not re-space the rear axle.
- Steel only. We do not offer this service for any material other than steel.
- Right of refusal. We reserve the right to refuse to work on any frame and/or fork, for any reason. If we refuse, we will be forthright and tell you why we’re not going to modify the frame.
